I am Emeritus Professor Music at the Open University and Professor of Music Research at the Royal College of Music, London. Half of my career was spent as a trombone player (modern and period instruments) mainly the BBC Symphony Orchestra, The Taverner Players, Music Reservata and the Wallace Collection. I specialise in brass instruments and have written and edited books on brass bands, military music, the trombne, The Cambridge Encyclopedia and the Cambridge Companion to Brass Instruments as well as many articles and contributions to works of reference. My primary interest is in the cultural history and performance practice of brass instruments.I also have a subsidiary interest in the cultural history of Wales and have also published in that field.
